Following the painful decision to suspend all performances in both the main house and the studio, we will be in touch with all ticket holders, artists and producers over the coming days and hope to return to normal in the near future. There is very little that we find more upsetting than a closed theatre, particularly when a host of exciting new shows had been lined up for the weeks ahead, but public health is and has to be our priority.
Most shows are being postponed, not cancelled – audiences in Greenwich will still be given the opportunity to see the work of these pioneering, daring, adventurous and entertaining companies and Greenwich Theatre will remain home to some of the UK’s most important emerging companies and producers of family theatre.
We know that this is a global crisis, and you will have heard from many arts organisations about the impact the closures will have on all theatres and arts venues. For those that are unaware, at Greenwich Theatre less than 10% of our income comes from public funding, so 90% is generated through a combination of ticket sales, bar sales and hire fees – all of which have taken a substantial hit during this crisis. It has been through your help and support over the years that we have not only continued to function but to thrive, but that is now under threat. To ensure that we can continue in our work, supporting artists and the community and bringing the very best live theatre to South East London, we now need your help more than ever.
Whilst we understand the uncertainty of the current economic and social climate, if you feel able to make a donation, regardless of the amount, you will play a crucial part in ensuring the reopening of the theatre very soon. Additionally, if you would like to further support us in what is set to become one of the most challenging periods of this theatre’s long history, do consider buying a Friends’ membership, supporting our Buy a Brick campaign, or donating your ticket back to us if you are scheduled to attend one of our postponed performances. We are determined to emerge stronger than ever from this difficult period, but we can only achieve that with your help.
Thank you for your continued love and support, without which the theatre wouldn’t be what it is today.
From all at Greenwich Theatre
