The Snow Child
Our adaptation of The Snow Child is inspired by the traditional Russian folktale, which follows an elderly couple wishing for a child. One winter, the elderly couple make a girl out of snow and she magically comes to life. In Russia, the child is known as Snegurochka or the Snow Maiden , a girl who is half human and half made of snow.
Greenwich Theatre enjoys a tradition of developing new and old stories. That ethos runs throughout our work, whether it means casting exceptional graduate performers in our Christmas show, creating showcase moments for young companies as part of the Greenwich Children’s Theatre Festival, co-producing with emerging companies to enable them to tour, or ensuring that the seasonal programme here at Greenwich Theatre features a number of high profile performances by emerging companies.
The Snow Child is no exception as this project, headed up by our Artistic Director James Haddrell, is brought to life by a group of talented actor musicians and has been platformed for us by Maritime Radio. In the form of a radio drama, this classic Russian folktale is reimagined and given a new lease of life for modern audiences here in Greenwich! Split into 3 episodes this story was broadcast live and now finds it permanent home here for you to enjoy on demand at greenwichtheatre.org.uk. Finally, a big thank you to the children of Invicta Primary School for beautifully illustrating this project!
