An evening with historians Dr Nigel Fletcher and Katherine Carter discussing the remarkable friendship between two giant figures in British history.

Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth II are two of the most iconic figures in modern British history. When Elizabeth became monarch in 1952, Churchill was waiting to greet her as her first Prime Minister, and together their relationship helped define the age we live in.

In a fascinating evening, two eminent historians will delve into the private worlds and shared interests of these two truly unique people. Nigel and Katherine will share revealing and entertaining stories from their recent books on the subject, and invite questions from the audience.

Signed copies of both their books can be obtained after the event, with a special discount price if they are purchased in advance alongside event tickets.

All proceeds from ticket sales go towards supporting Greenwich Theatre’s charitable work on stage and in the community.

Dr Nigel Fletcher is a political and constitutional historian whose work focuses on postwar British history and the modern monarchy.

He taught for seven years at King’s College London, where he remains a Visiting Fellow. In 2025 he was appointed as the Ken Young Memorial Research Fellow at the Mile End Institute, Queen Mary, University of London.

He appears regularly in the media providing expert commentary on political and royal history, including for the BBC, Times Radio and CBS (America).

Katherine Carter is a curator and historian who has managed the house and collections at Chartwell, Churchill’s country home, for more than a decade. 

A commentator and adviser on the life and legacy of Sir Winston Churchill, she lectures internationally and appears frequently in print and broadcast media. 

Her first book Churchill’s Citadel: Chartwell and the Gatherings Before the Storm, was published by Yale University Press in September 2024.
