After a chance-meeting on a rainy night in Covent Garden, Professor Higgins, a scientist of phonetics, ends up striking a bet with Colonel Pickering, a linguist of Indian dialects, after claiming that he could transform a poor cockney speaking flower-seller, Eliza Doolittle, into a well-spoken duchess.
